The Story Behind the Shot
I'll be honest with y'all – I almost missed this entire encounter. Day three on Iceland's Ring Road, running behind schedule, dodging rain (because, well, it's Iceland), and I was just trying to check another overlook off my list before heading to what I thought would be my "real" puffin spot on the eastern coast.
But sometimes the best adventures find you when you're not looking. After scrambling back to my rental Jeep in the rain to swap my 24-70mm for my 100-400mm lens, I found myself face-to-face with this adorable character. While other tourists snapped phone pics, this little guy stepped out from the greenery and looked straight at me with the most puzzled, head-cocking expression. It was my first real puffin encounter, and I realized they're even cuter in person than in all those photos you see.
There's something magical about that moment when wildlife looks directly into your lens – like they're trying to figure you out as much as you're captivated by them. This rainy day near Vík gave me some of my favorite shots from the entire Iceland adventure, reminding me why protecting these coastal habitats matters so much for these incredible seabirds.
