The Story Behind the Shot

This wild adventure started with a YouTube video that stopped me completely. I'd never heard of Moraine Lake until I watched Peter McKinnon's documentary. He talked about his bucket shot. Suddenly I knew I had to see this place for myself. It became my first solo photography trip outside the US. It called me to the Canadian Rockies on what felt like a trip.

The night before this capture, I'd driven down from Jasper. I rolled into my hotel around 9 PM. A brutal 2 AM wake-up call was waiting. This was before the shuttle system existed. If you didn't get one of those special parking spots, you couldn't see sunrise. You weren't seeing sunrise at Moraine Lake, period. I remember gripping the wheel tight on the Trans-Canada Highway at 3 AM. I watched taillights ahead and wondered if that car would take the last spot.

Thankfully, the guards let me through just before they closed the road. I wound through that twisty mountain road in complete darkness. I got one of the final three parking spots. I climbed the famous rockpile in pitch black. I wondered if this famous place could possibly live up to the hype. A kind photographer from Buffalo shared some wall space with me. We became fast friends during that long, cold wait in the darkness. Around 5:15 AM, I took a long exposure shot into what looked like nothing. When I checked my camera's LCD screen – there it was. That impossibly emerald lake I'd seen in videos actually existed. I was watching this world-famous view literally come "out of the darkness." It was bathed in golden alpine light.
