The Story Behind the Shot
This wild adventure started with a YouTube video that stopped me dead in my tracks. I'd never heard of Moraine Lake until I watched Peter McKinnon's documentary about his bucket shot, and suddenly I knew I had to see this place for myself. It became my first solo photography trip outside the US, calling me all the way to the Canadian Rockies on what felt like a pilgrimage.
The night before this capture, I'd driven down from Jasper, rolling into my hotel around 9 PM with a brutal 2 AM wake-up call looming. This was back before the shuttle system existed – if you didn't snag one of those coveted parking spots, you weren't seeing sunrise at Moraine Lake, period. I remember white-knuckling it down the Trans-Canada Highway at 3 AM, watching taillights ahead and wondering if that car would take the last spot.
Thankfully, the guards waved me through just before they closed the road. I wound through that twisty mountain road in complete darkness and claimed one of the final three parking spots. Climbing the famous rockpile in pitch black, I questioned whether this legendary place could possibly live up to the hype. A kind photographer from Buffalo shared some wall space with me, and we became fast friends during that long, cold wait in the darkness. Around 5:15 AM, I took a long exposure shot into what looked like absolute nothingness. When I checked my camera's LCD screen – there it was. That impossibly emerald lake I'd seen in videos actually existed, and I was watching this world-famous vista literally emerge "out of the darkness," bathed in golden alpine light.
