The Story Behind the Shot
This koala photography print shows something special from my trips to Raymond Island, Australia. I was exploring this amazing wildlife sanctuary when I spotted this curious guy. He was in someone's front yard, holding onto a branch just feet from the ground.
This shot was different from my other koala images because of his curious nature. Instead of the sleepy koala we usually picture, this guy was wide awake. He was watching every move I made. The timing was perfect and hard at the same time. Thunder was rumbling far away, and light rain had started to fall. But this koala seemed calm about the approaching storm.
At 200mm, I caught that direct look and how he held his eucalyptus tree. There's something both cuddly and tough about how koalas move through their world. This image perfectly shows that mix. Raymond Island holds a special place in my heart as a wildlife photographer. It's one of the few places where koala groups stay stable and protected.
