The Story Behind the Shot

Y'all, this kangaroo photography print wasn't what I set out to capture that day. I was deep in koala country on Raymond Island, following the designated koala trail with my 400mm lens ready for those elusive eucalyptus dwellers. I'd made it through the neighborhood section and was heading into the protected habitat when I rounded a corner and found myself face-to-face with this beautiful lady and her mob, just standing in the middle of the trail like they owned the place.

While her companions eventually wandered off, this gorgeous girl decided she wasn't budging. She stood there like a perfect portrait subject, eyes locked on my camera, completely unbothered by my presence. Sometimes the best shots happen when you least expect them – I came for koalas but left with one of my favorite wildlife portraits ever.
