The Story Behind the Shot
I was racing around Iceland's Ring Road, way behind schedule and facing a choice near Breiðdalsvík - take the long, winding fjord route or cut inland through the mountains. With puffins waiting the next day and daylight burning, I chose the gravel road shortcut through Eastern Iceland's backcountry.
What I found was some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen. This scene stopped me cold - literally shooting through my Jeep's driver window for just a few minutes. Light was breaking through the clouds with just enough haze to create these incredible beams illuminating a winding river below. Those dynamic hills Iceland is famous for stretched into the distance, with waterfalls tucked into the background, and this serene river snaking out of the mountains.
It's funny how the shots you don't plan sometimes turn out to be the ones that capture your heart. I thought it was just a quick snapshot, but when I looked at it later, I realized I'd captured something really special - a perfect introduction to what Eastern Iceland looks like when you get away from the tourist routes.
